The sculpture sitting on the desk was exhibited in two previous forms: originally at Helper Gallery, New York (October 2016) in a group show dedicated to mushrooms, and following that, it was transformed and shown at Holiday Forever Gallery in Wyoming (February 2018) in a show titled "Houdini Gulch," conceived around the idea of escape. This mutable object has embedded itself in Johnson's practice as an auxiliary to her two dimensional work for the past few years. It reflects her thinking on color, material and narrative and often serves as a model for forms that appear in her drawings and paintings (as well as acting as a kind of studio pet). In its current state, it has shed its previous upright posture and has moved into a supine position, crudely upholstered with pink fabric. This installation introduces a secondary element: puddle-like drawings that reflect the sculpture but that more rightly belong to what's underneath.
Gretta Johnson (b.1985) is a New York based artist. She received her BFA from RISD in 2008. Recent solo exhibitions include a show of new paintings at Paris London Hong Kong (Chicago) and “Jackets/Machines/Hair” at Feuer/Mesler (New York). She was included in a group show at Rachel Uffner Gallery curated by Night Gallery (Los Angeles) this past June. This is Gretta Johnson’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles.
