Summer is upon us. The tide is rising, change is budding and brimming, days begin flooded. In honor of this season of high heat and soft-underbellies, Lucy Bull and guest curator Nikita McCauley invite you to witness an ephemeral group show on hermit crab shells, exhibited at the Topanga Beach Tide Pools.

Hermit crabs are triumphs of life–immured yet free, they move from shell to shell, constructing home from what they encounter. Bending, bridging, they grasp with protean generativity at pearly rubble wherever they might fit. That shell is pretty, but that shell is too small for me! In search of a hideout, a secret, a getaway onto the next–we ask you–if you were a crab, what would you cling to?

For this exhibition, a collection of artists based in Los Angeles were invited to make a work on the surface of a hermit crab shell, to then be returned to the crabs’ natural habitat and left for their use. Each shell was made using ocean safe materials and will be on view from July 25th until the tide, or a crab, takes it.

Featuring work by artists Stephen Aldahl, Sebastian Black, Ross Caliendo, Nick Campbell, Misa Chhan, Matt Copson, Phil Davis, Katja Farin, Brendan Fowler, John Garcia, Jan Gatewood, Cherisse Grey, Luke Haeger, Blu Hunt, Hea-Mi Kim, Calvin Marcus, David Mendoza, Chad Murray, Andrew Norman Wilson, Ariana Papademetropoulos, Alina Perkins, Natasha Romano, Lauren Satlowski, Tristan Unrau, Jessica Williams, Jordan Wolfson and Julia Yerger.
